Synopsis (via Goodreads)
: They are the Others-the vampires, mages, and werewolves once thought to exist only in our imaginations. Now they're stepping out of the shadows, and nothing in our world will ever be the same again...
In A Town Like This, Being A P.I. Can Be Murder
Shiarra Waynest's detective work was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm-if it doesn't kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York's most powerful vampires.
As soon as Shiarra meets sexy, mesmerizing vamp Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her, and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs back-up and enlists her ex-boyfriend-a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing-and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren't always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil-whether she likes it or not...

Scoot’s Review:
Shiarra spends her life trying to avoid Others.  Her ex-boyfriend was an ‘Other’ – hence the ex. However, when her PI business is about to tank financially Shiarra is desperate enough to take a case that puts her right into the middle of a deadly fight between the Others.  Shiarra is quickly in over her curly-red-100% human-head and has to hastily adapt to the changing world around her.  Her perspective changes as she learns that the Others aren’t always so ‘Other’, and she learns some new skills while being forced into situations she may or may not be able to survive.  This was a fun read; I liked the world created for the story and I liked Shiarra.  Shiarra felt like a pretty down to earth and “normal” person.  Yes - she can be tough when she needs to be, but at the same time she is often scared stiff – much like I imagined I would be in the same situation.  The tension (in all forms) felt real and the story was fast paced.  I was happy with the ending; although once the main plotline was finished the story seemed to wrap up a little quickly. Overall it was a great read and I look forward to getting started on the sequel!
