Invincible (Chronicles of Nick #2)

Invincible (Chronicles of Nick #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Genre: Young Adult – Urban Fantasy
Publication Date: March 22nd 2011
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Age Range: Young Adult
Pages: 420
Book Source: Audiobook from Library

Synopsis (via Goodreads): Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.

His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.

But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them...

Scoot’s Review:
If you enjoyed Infinity then you will enjoy Invincible.   Invincible was another fun read!  This time there were no zombies; but there was a creepy bad guy willing to kill anyone to get what he wanted.  Nick continues to be a great lead.  Nick is witty and an all around good guy who defends his mother; and is just learning to deal with life as a 14 year-old with recently discovered magical abilities.  In this novel Nick learns more about his future and his destiny (what everyone is trying to avoid).  He also develops some new magical talents that throw his life for a loop.  The plot has a lot of layers; there seem to be entire worlds of new characters and abilities that we will slowly be introduced to throughout the series.  I have not ever read Kenyon’s corresponding adult series, but I still find these novels enjoyable and easy to read.  The pace of the novel is good – with plenty of action and quick plot-lines to keep the story fast paced and interesting.   Nick is only 14, but there is still a smidgen of romance in the novel – which I always enjoy. Also, I just wanted to say that I listened to the book on audio and the narrator Holter Graham does a fabulous job.  He has a great way of making the story come to life.  Invincible is an entertaining addition to the Chronicles of Nick series. The story arc for this novel was complete, but the overall story arc of the series has plenty left to offer so I am looking forward to the next book! Lucky for me Infamous is already released so I won’t even have to wait.

Crossed

Crossed by Ally Condie

Genre: Young Adult – Dystopian
Publication Date: November 1st 2011
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Age Range: Young Adult
Pages:  367
Book Source: ARC prize from contest

Synopsis (via Goodreads)
: Rules Are Different Outside The Society

Chasing down an uncertain future, Cassia makes her way to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky--taken by the Society to his sure death--only to find that he has escaped into the majestic, but treacherous, canyons. On this wild frontier are glimmers of a different life and the enthralling promise of a rebellion. But even as Cassia sacrifices every thing to reunite with Ky, ingenious surprises from Xander may change the game once again.

Narrated from both Cassia's and Ky's point of view, this hotly anticipated sequel to Matched will take them both to the edge of Society, where nothing is as expected and crosses and double crosses make their path more twisted than ever.

Scoot’s Review:
I was looking forward to this sequel to find out what was going to happen to Cassia and Ky.  However, in the end I was just so BORED with it.  This book seemed outrageously slow to me. I kept reading the story because I wanted to know what was going to happen, but overall I didn’t enjoy the book.  I really liked Matched, but the pace and stress of the first novel just seemed to be lacking in Crossed.  There was a lot of flowery pondering about poems, and a lot of sacrificing everything for what felt like nothing to me.  Cassia was a less likeable character in this novel for me because her backbone went all floppy again and her priorities changed overnight from finding and being with Ky to full on rebellion.  It just seemed a little far fetched.  Furthermore, the author seemed to be attempting to drag the love triangle out – when I was under the impression the decision had already been made.  Some readers might love the mystery, but I am burned out on love triangles so I found it annoying to read about a wishy-washy female lead.  On the plus side, the writing, character, and world building were good.  There were also some heartstring-pulling scenes that helped give the story some depth.  I am not in a huge rush to read the final portion of the trilogy, but I don’t plan to fully give up on it.  Here’s hoping the third book, Reached, can hold my interest more.

Waiting on Wednesday (58): Taken by Storm & The Lost Prince

Time for "Waiting On Wednesday" weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine! Waiting on Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

  Coming Soon...

Taken by Storm by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
To Be Published: May 22nd 2012 by EgmontUSA

"Bryn knows first-hand that being the alpha of a werewolf pack means making hard decisions, and that being human makes things a thousand times worse. She's prepared to give up her humanity, but the wolf who promised to Change her is waiting - though for what, Bryn doesn't know. Still human, she must take her place in the werewolf Senate, the precarious democracy that rules the North American packs. Standing side by side with werewolves who were ancient long before she was ever born is enough of a challenge, but Bryn soon learns that the Senate has been called to deal with a problem: the kind of problem that involves human bodies, a Rabid werewolf, and memories that Bryn, Chase, and the rest of their pack would rather forget. With bodies stacking up and political pressure closing in from all sides, Bryn and her pack are going to have to turn to old enemies and even older friends for help - especially when it starts to look like this time, the monster might be one of their own."

My Ramblings on Taken by Storm: I have really enjoyed the first two novels in the Raised by Wolves series, so I am excited about this one.  Just one more week and I will be able to get my hands on it!  I am really curious to see what is going to happen for Bryn now that she is Alpha of her own pack.  Here's hoping it all turns out for the best.  *crossingfingersforluck*

 Waiting for the long haul...

The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa
To Be Published: October 23rd 2012 by Harlequin Teen

"Set several years after the events of the first, this trilogy will star an older Ethan Chase, Meghan's brother."

My Ramblings on The Lost Prince: Everyone knows I am a big fan of Julie Kagawa's writing...  So of course I am excited about this new series.  I loved the world she created in the Iron Fey series and I am looking forward to getting to know Ethan Chase as something more than just the adorable little brother Meghan saved once. This one should be great!
