Book Beginnings on Friday (5)

Time for Book Beginnings on Friday meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners! The weekly goal is to share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading!
"'Our daughter looks like a South China peasant with those red cheeks', my father complains, pointedly ignoring the soup before him."

Shanghai Girls
by Lisa See

I just picked this book up at the library last night.  I have never read anything by Lisa See, but have seen good reviews for this book. The synopsis sounds interesting and I am always happy to find a good historical fiction. I am looking forward to reading it!

  6. Haven't read Shanghai Girls yet but I loved her other two books.

Great opening line - The reader immediately feels sympathy for the narrator.

  7. I have heard many good things about this book too and I hope that you enjoy it. I don't think that the opener is particularly strong to be honest, but I am sure that it is still a great book
