Book Ban

I am going on a self imposed Book Ban.

I have three weeks left of my college summer term and I have been an absolute slacker. I have waited until the last three weeks of the term to work on my course that I had three months to complete. Why do I do this to myself??? Obviously because I would much rather be reading than doing Algebra. So I am imposing a book ban on myself because I really need to pass this math class. Wish me luck!

Inner-Scoot: NO READING FOR FUN FOR THREE WEEKS!! ONLY HOMEWORK ALLOWED! NO READING. NO REVIEWS. NO BLOGGING. NOTHING!
Scoot: Please no! I don't want to do algebra!!! Boo on that.
Inner-Scoot: Too bad slacker-pants! You procrastinated and now you have to deal. Bust out the pocket protector and calculator. Time to start crunching numbers.
Scoot: *wail of sadness*

Linger: The Wolves of Mercy Falls 2

Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Genre: Teen Fiction – Romance/Fantasy
Publication Date: July 2010
Age Range: Young Adult
Pages:
368 pages
Date Scoot Read: July 2010
Source: Audiobook

Scoot's Rating:
10 – Amazing! Loved it. Read it now!

Synopsis (via Goodreads): In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love -- the light and the dark, the warm and the cold -- in a way you will never forget.

Scoot’s Review:
Moving. Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Poignant. So many different feelings come to mind when thinking of Linger. This was a wonderful book. Having loved Shiver, Linger’s predecessor, I was very excited to find out what happens next for Grace and Sam. Maggie Stiefvater did not disappoint. Throughout the novel you come to love Sam, with his paper cranes and poetry, even more than you did before (is that possible?). This story is so well written. Weaved within the intricate plot is imagery that makes even mundane things seem interesting; Like toe nail clippings. However heartrending the new story developments were they were written so well I couldn’t stop reading. I enjoyed the additional points of view of Isabelle and Cole. Isabelle was intriguing and you come to know her on an entirely different level while Cole is complex – you hate and love him. At times you just want to hit him, but then he does something unexpected and you can’t help but like him. Linger is the perfect continuation of Shiver and I can’t wait for Forever to arrive to complete the story. There is so much I still want to know! I highly recommend this book!

Random plug for the Audiobook: I listened to this story and it was amazing! The combined talents of Jenna Lamia, Pierce Cravens, Dan Bittner and Emma Galvin were incredible. They did a fabulous job and I really enjoyed it. The voice talent –makes or breaks- an audiobook, and they pulled it off. I know there is nothing like actually turning the pages yourself, but if you don’t have a lot of actual reading time this story is totally worth it if you are teetering on the edge of deciding.

Linger debut's at #1 on the NYT best seller list!

I love this!

Congratulations Maggie!!!

Look Again

Author: Lisa Scottoline
Genre: Thriller
Publication Date: April 2009
Age Range: Adult
Pages:
352 pages
Date Scoot Read: July 2010
Source: Hardcover Library Book

Scoot's Rating: 6- Good read with small flaws.

Synopsis (via Goodreads): When reporter Ellen Gleeson gets a “Have You Seen This Child?” flyer in the mail, she almost throws it away. But something about it makes her look again, and her heart stops—the child in the photo is identical to her adopted son, Will. Her every instinct tells her to deny the similarity between the boys, because she knows her adoption was lawful. But she’s a journalist and won’t be able to stop thinking about the photo until she figures out the truth. And she can’t shake the question: if Will rightfully belongs to someone else, should she keep him or give him up? She investigates, uncovering clues no one was meant to discover, and when she digs too deep, she risks losing her own life—and that of the son she loves.

Lisa Scottoline breaks new ground in Look Again, a thriller that’s both heart-stopping and heart-breaking, and sure to have new fans and book clubs buzzing

Scoot’s Review:

I have mixed feelings on this novel. On one hand the story concept was very intriguing and often heart-wrenching, but overall I never connected with the main character. I felt disconnected from Ellen the entire novel; like she was a hollow person surrounded by characters with way more depth. Despite the lack of a solid main character the author was able to write well enough to make me almost burst into tears during one particularly distraught scene. The story is filled with small emotional pleas regarding children which would pull on even the Grinch’s heartstrings. I feel the little boy Will carried most of the moving scenes in this novel. The story was fast paced and had enough twists to keep you on your toes until almost the last page. The action was quick – but drastic. The small amount of romance in the book seemed like an afterthought the author threw in just to fill pages. I feel the story would have been improved by just leaving the romance out altogether. Overall I would recommend the book if you are looking for a quick read or something new.
